Namco Bandai Aims To Expand Digital Presence In 2010

Picture
With an onslaught of classics in the pipeline primed for re-release, Namco Bandai is preparing to ramp up its presence in the digital market next year. Namco says the initiative will give customers “access to hard-to-find gems and the latest best-selling content available at their fingertips” across the entire slate of portable and console platforms. To offer a glimpse at what’s up and coming, currently Beautiful Katamari is slated for a digital re-release in Q1 2010 on Microsoft’s Xbox Live Games on Demand service. PSP title Me & My Katamari was made available on PSN yesterday as a UMD legacy download. Expect to see a steady supply of PSOne Classics from Namco’s backcatalog hitting the PlayStation Store as we move into 2010 as well.

European PSPGo Incentive 2.0

Picture
Oh Europe, you've had it goin' on for quite some time... The history, art, rolling country sides, fine wines, delicious beer, hot babes and now free games. When is North America going to catch a break? Turns out that the incentive program introduced during Sony's PSP Go launch hasn't let up in the slightest. Before you were able to choose 3 free games out of 17....if you register the UMD with your previous PSP online. Now you just need to simply own a PSP Go.

In order to spice things up even more, Europeans who own the PSP Go can just simply stroll on over to the PSN Store and snag Gran Turismo, MotorStorm: Arctic Edge or Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines (or, in Germany, LittleBigPlanet) until January 10. Now my first reaction is WTF....well, that's really my only reaction at this present time.

I don't know what you guys had to do to get such sweet perks, but I have a feeling it involves sharing or giving up one of the 6 items I listed about your continent at the beginning of this article. Have fun with your awesome top tier PSP Go titles for free......can't believe I'm still paying for games like a sucker.

Licensed Accessory Maker Name Drops PSP-4000

Picture
A recently published advertisement for a licensed LittleBigPlanet-themed PSP case from Accessories4Technology may have unintentionally confirmed existence of a PSP-4000. Specifically, the advert makes mention of compatibility with 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 series PSP models. While Sony has yet to officially announce a fourth generation PSP separate from the go line, it’s no secret that such a product has been heavily rumored in the past. Talk of the supposed 4000 was reportedly one of the hot topics among Japanese game developers at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. This, coupled with the fact that Sony has a historically dubious track record of keeping premature information regarding new PSP iterations under the rug, makes it hard to us to simply put this down to being your typical print snafu.

All that being said, it certainly won’t be a surprise to us if  more details to trickle out within the coming months, eventually leading up to an announcement and subsequent product unveiling. In the meantime, we’ve contacted Sony for comment.

BioWare Co-Founder Criticizes The JRPG for A Lack of Evolution

Picture
BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk is laying down the gauntlet, criticizing modern-day JRPGs for a lack of evolution. Speaking to Destructoid, he lamented that RPG developers in Japan are not moving forward, but instead are delivering the same product over and over again in a fresh coat of paint. In other words, Zeschuk feels the core mechanics  are being neglected in favor of presentational aspects. The fall of the JRPG in large part is due to a lack of evolution, a lack of progression. They kept delivering the same thing over and over. They make the dressing better, they look prettier, but it’s still the same experience.

An interesting view indeed. When you think about it, it’s hard not to agree. But the old adage of “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” also rings true here. Do JRPG gamers really want change? Not sticking with the fundamentals is a big risk for companies and as we’ve seen in the past, sometimes it does not pay off. By the same token, it can pay off. Most developers like to stay on the safe side for obvious reasons.

3D PSP V-Screen Pushed to 2010Title.

Picture
What's cooler than the most powerful handheld console on the market? The most powerful handheld console IN 3D! That's what. Now I ask you this. What's worse than having to wait another month to check it out? Having to wait another month and a half. That's what.

The V-Screen Peripheral for the PSP was supposed to be launched sometime during the holiday season. That date has since been bumped to January 7th where the world premiere of the device will take place during the 2010 CES (Consumer Electronics Show). I guess they want to pump up the hype around their product by ensuring some good press is available for the peripheral at launch time.

The V-Screen is said to incorporate "optical technology first developed for the medical world in order to enhance depth cues hidden in existing images." Sounds sexy. The peripheral is said to function perfectly with all PSP models excluding the Go based due to the differential in size. I'm sure it will still work but the screen sizes just wont match up accurately potential causing a less than perfect viewing angle.

PSN Digital Comics Now Available for PSP

Picture
The day has come Dashhacks Nation. Bust out your PSP's and cruise on over to the PSN Store. Time to treat yourself with a comic book or two to pass the time on those long, tedious bus rides or mandatory family gatherings.

I used to be big into comics but that part of my life has unfortunately passed. Who knows, this may actually rejuvenate my old flame for comics. The entire process and interface looks pretty sweet. I also do like the idea of having comics on my PSP. Of course, once you read one, I doubt you'll visit it again but the idea of loading up about 5 or 6 comics prior to a boring as road trip is pretty good idea.

You first need to download the digital comic reader application accessible under the Extras icon on the XMB. Then, shoot over to the PlayStation Store, directly on the PSP or via MediaGo (on the PC).

PlayStation has a partnered with Marvel, IDW Publishing and Disney so expect lots of goodies from those publishers.

Once again, Canada receives the shaft....*grinds teeth*

PSP-4000 Unofficial Existence Leaked?

Picture
You could chalk this one up to another bumbling scerw up from some marketing firm but it looks like yet another variant of the PSP is in the pipe line and may be available very soon. How soon? Who knows. I'd advise everyone to fold this one up and place it in the rumour drawer for now but if history repeats itself, it's more than likely another slip up that will ruin another big surprise party for Sony.

An ad for a bunch of LittleBigPlanet peripherals has the PSP-4000 listed as compatible with all of this crap. Good to know that an un-announced PSP will be compatible with this stuff. I guess someone forgot to mention that this hasn't even been announced yet.

Analysts anticipate that a PSPGo style unit with a UMD drive will undoubtedly be released but Sony has remained hush about the subject, not releasing any official word of it's existence.
